Situated in North Western Greece, not far from the Albanian border, Zagori (a slavic word meaning Beyond the mountain) covers an area of roughly 1000 square kilometers and contains more or less 45 villages, nowadays divided to just three communities. Due to its difficult access, the area was not developped until the fifties, when the first roads were opened. The area suffered a lot during the Second world war and the German occupation, but also during the Greek civil war, when it was all but deserted by its inhabitants. But lately this pristine, out of time place has become the most common secret among nature lovers in Greece, and not only. This is a real paradise for trekking, as well as mountain sports: rafting, kayaking, mountain biking.... Eating is not bad at all either, and Zagori boasts nowadays of more boutique hotels than it can actually sustain. Shop owners told me that construction has all but stopped since the beginning of the Greek financial crisis. I sometimes felt bad, having all this beauty for just myself. I am sure I am going to go back soon, with better trekking shoes and even more film...
